Each year the Air Force awards distinguished unit citations and outstanding citations to AFJROTC units throughout the country. The Houston area recently received an overwhelming 16 of these awards out of 32 units in the area.
The Air Force Junior ROTC Distinguished Unit Award is awarded to the top units in the nation based on cadet-based goals and accomplishments in the areas of academics, extra-curricular activities and community service. Units receiving the Distinguished Unit Award with Merit received an overall Exceeds Standards rating on their headquarters Unit Evaluation, if the unit was evaluated in the 2010 – 2011 school year. The units receive a flag streamer and each cadet in the unit is authorized to wear the Distinguished Unit Award ribbon. The Air Force Junior ROTC Outstanding Organization Award is awarded to those units considered for the Distinguished Unit Award, but not selected.
